The Archaeologist

Today I started a big project to reclaim the backyard from the ivy, weeds and what not. It turned out to be more of an archaeological expedition than anything else, but unlike “Indiana Jones,” I went with the T-shirt and shorts sans leather jacket and fedora.

Because our house had been empty for some time before we moved in, much of the back yard was overgrown with ivy, including many of the trees. The photo below taken last September before we had the tree in the photo removed gives a good view of the overgrowth.

It wasn’t until recently when I started to take a look at other homes around our neighborhood that I realized how bad the ivy growth had become. Most yards had little or no ivy. Yards that did, especially ones that back up to the creek like ours, only had a little ivy growth near the creek, nothing more.

Other things to deal with… There were these bricks all over the yard that a previous owner had set up to line dirt/mulch walkways. After the “Great Septic Tank Discovery” and the tree removal last year, these bricks were scattered all over the place. Also, there’s a cement walkway in the backyard that leads from a point somewhere below our patio down almost to the creek. There’s also a cement walkway that branches off this which leads to a cement slab - where we’ll be placing our shed in a few weeks.

The next photo (below) was taken three days ago, which shows the ivy on either side of the walkway, but I had removed many of the bricks a couple weekends ago.

Compare to this photo (below) taken today after I finished.

One thing we could never figure out was how did the previous owners get down to the walkway from the patio above. I was thinking maybe they had wooden steps that had since rotted and been removed. I found an old painted wooden dowel last year in that area.

I figured once I raked through the ivy with a metal rake, to make sure there were no bricks or rocks, I could run over it with the lawnmower.

Like “Indiana Jones,” I’m not a big fan of snakes, but who is. In Virginia, we had some garter snakes and black snakes, which are all well and good. But, we were told to be on the lookout for copperheads, especially hiding in the ivy. This report was confirmed by the plumbers who encountered some small copperheads on their septic tank dig. They told us the copperheads quickly became non-snakes courtesy of their shovel. Since then, I usually have a shovel with me when I’m working in the yard even when I don’t need it. Today I had it partly for a chance snake encounter, but mostly to dig out little trees/shrubs that had taken root in the ivy. I will tell you that I only encountered one small snake, little actually. I don’t know what kind of snake only that it was brown and then it was dead. I also encountered a couple really big millipedes or centipedes, yep dead too.

Anyway, back to the “dig.” I started raking from the walkway up toward the patio where the ivy is growing all over the hillside. I soon discovered a cement ramp buried under the ivy leading down from the patio. Not sure if this was meant to be a walkway or for drainage because it’s pretty steep. Parts of the ramp were lined with brick and some areas had a ridge on the side.

I found plenty of other stuff in the ivy, besides bricks and rocks; I also found a paint can, a kid’s sneaker and a bird feeder.

At least I got one side of the walkway done. I want to clear off the other side of the walkway down to the cement slab. I doubt I’ll clear it all the way to the creek, but I want to clear it up to the trees and then get some grass growing. Hopefully I can get some more done tomorrow, but it’s supposed to rain so maybe not.

Raking through the ivy and pulling it out, along with some roots, wore me out. It's Modelo time baby!

Almost forgot, Lago's recipe post last night was our 100th post on Lago's Lounge!

Dinner is served!

So, I thought I might share this evening's recipe a) because I haven't posted one in a long time and b) b/c it looks and smells fabulous!!
On the menu this evening at Lago's lounge is Stuffed Baked Tilapia over Spinach with green beans and salad.

Place the spinach in a pot of cold water.

First I marinated the tilapia in my own blend of herbs and EVOO:
EVOO 1/2 cup
handful of fresh parsley finely chopped
handful of fresh cilantro finely chopped,
3 sprigs of fresh thyme
3 cloves garlic finely chopped
paprika, smoked sweet Spanish (I get mine from LaTienda.com)
onion powder
Sea Salt
fresh ground pepper

Place these ingredients together in a small bowl and mix well. In a 1 gallon Ziploc bag place your tilapia fillets (in our case, it's 2) and pour the mix in the bag. A la style of Emeril, close the bag and shake well. Let marinate in the fridge for 1 hour.

While the tilpia was marinating I made the salad using a mescalin mix lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumber, green peppers and pears. I then prepared the tilapia stuffing . I chopped :
handful of spinach
1 celery sprig
1/4 of a green pepper
1/2 small onion
4 cloves of garlic
1/2 of a large portabello mushroom
4 tbspns EVOO
1/4 pound of sea scallops
1/4 pound large shrimp
4 tbspsn of cheese of your choice (I used smoked gouda and guirre)

Heat 1/2 of the EVOO in a small pan and then add the onion, spinach, mushroom, 1/2 garlic, celery and green pepper. In another pan add 2 tbspns of EVOO, heat and add garlic, scallops and shrimp( the shrimp have been deveined and cleaned and chopped prior to cooking). Cook until celery is soft and seafood is just cooked. Mix contents of both pans together. Add cheeses and set aside for a moment.

Preheat oven to 350 and turn on burner for spinach to medium heat.

Remove tilapia form marinade and place on parchment paper or a cutting board. Stuff with the filling made above and tie closed with cooking twine. Place in a square pan that has been oiled and bake in oven for 25 minutes.

After 10 minutes of cooking, add the green beans to the oven on a separate sheet (I usually top mine with salt, pepper, garlic and EVOO).

After about 20 minutes the spinach should been a bit tender but still look leafy and not that dark green color....strain and place on plates in a thin layer (the tilapia Will rest on the spinach bed).
Green beans are finfished when they are bright and crisp. Remove from oven at this time (about 15 minutes)
When the Tilapia is finished, remove the time and place on plates over spinach.
Add green beans on the side. I serve salad on a separate plate with choice of dressing.

No dessert here, always too much food...

Post Script- dinner was delicious!! the Tilapia tends to take on the flavor of the things around it, so herbs are particularly important.

Bon Appetite

On Tap @ The Lounge - 3/30/2007

Buona Sera! Hope y'all had a great week. Discussions have commenced for the DMB shows we might attend this year, but at a leisurely pace since we have more than a week to decide.

Lago is busy preparing some tilapia for this evening while enjoying a glass of Clos Du Val Chardonnay.

I'm enjoying a Modelo Especial.

Meanwhile... The Monkey enjoys some Troegs, but remember don't Hassle The Hoff! (watch closely)

Last 5 songs on The Lounge jukebox:
"Thorn in My Pride" - The Black Crowes
"Get Me to the Church on Time" - Frank Sinatra (Vegas)
"Suck My Kiss" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Seek Up" - Dave Matthews Band (7/30/2001, Saratoga Springs)
"I Alone" - Live

On Tap for this weekend... I'm planning on reclaiming the backyard from the ivy, which will also help for when our shed arrives in a few weeks.

Last weekend I was finally able to get a good amount of screens in place so we can open some windows with the fine weather we've been having. That was a big chore because most screens were not in place and most of the ones that were in place were not secured.

I grew up in an older home, but I've never seen screens like this that have brackets at the top of the window and then hooks at the bottom to hold them in. Many of these I had to "MacGyver" because they were missing hooks or the hooks didn't line up with the studs. I'll keep you posted and maybe add some photos.

Old Stomping Grounds

I wanted to share some photos Mike White took in Staunton for those of you who may not venture over to Mike White's Blog. I used to work with Mike at Adelphia and he recently took a trip back to the "old stomping grounds." He snapped some picts of the old Adelphia offices and around town. Comcast took over the office there and then shut it down. As you'll see in the photos, the once buzzing offices now lay empty.

"Blue. No, Yellow!"

We've been having great weather since last week. Today we saw a high of 84, but with the good I suppose comes the bad. It's been so warm we've had a proliferation of pollen that has turned our vehicles and anything outside from their original color to a lemony shade of pollen.

My car is blue on most days, but not of late.

Lago's truck is black, well it used to be.

But Of Course...

On Tap at Lago's Lounge 3/24/07

Tonight's "On Tap" is being presented by Lago this evening.

We began the festivities this evening at Boardwalk Billy's down the road. They are known for their oyster bar, but Timmay always gets the ribs and somethin' else (chicken, skimps, crab cake). Tonight I had me some BBQ shrimp and tasty beverages. I have to say that tonight the beverages tasted better than the dinner! It's a cool place, though. The service is good and one can dine out on the patio and drop peanut shells on the floor.

As you can see, Bubba started his Saturday night festivities without us.

So, today in Charlotte, NC it felt like the first day of summer. The truck thermometer read 82 degrees on the way home from the gym at 3PM!! The order of things at the Lounge is that once summer feels like it's coming on, Lago indulges in some Corona and we add some Modelo Especial to the menu. Soon it will be time for the Sangria..cinco de mayo is on the way!!

Why don't people wash their hands?

OK, so I spend a tremendous amount of time people watching when I am out and about. While in Vegas, I noticed the obvious number of women who did not wash their hands before/after leaving the toilet. That is just completely disgusting to me! I wonder what is on her hands before she wipes! Can you imagine what is on a fertile woman's finger tips (with which she touches the door knob, menu, money, slot machine, eating utensils, her face to fix her makeup, the walls if she's had too much to drink) when she's completed her activities in the privacy of the bathroom stall? I'm not even going to describe the things my imagination is concocting right now lest I gross you all out.
I just want to encourage all you ladies out there to WASH YOUR HANDS WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED IN THE LIEU!!!
Thank you.

What Makes You Happy?

This line popped into my head this evening after witnessing a trying day for a co-worker. On one hand, at least it was work-related stress and not a family issue. This is hardly a comforting thought, especially because work, good or bad, takes up a large part of our lives.

Work is a necessary evil and why I’ve always found it important to enjoy what you do, or at least tolerate it well. All jobs have their up and downs, and as Lago put it earlier this evening, if you don’t tell anyone how you feel, then how will they know you’re unhappy? They probably won’t.

Remember those old black & white TV shows where the friend, parent, teacher or maybe even the boss could take one look at a person and know he or she is unhappy. In the real world, most people have issues of their own and unless they hear otherwise, they will assume everything is fine.

In time, you might be able to read someone like the old TV shows, but it doesn’t come quickly. It took me awhile to realize that there were times when Lago might be short with me, not because I said or did anything to irritate her, but because something else was bothering her. Now after some years together, I know the difference between my lunacy getting under her skin and when something is on her mind – most of the time. :~)

Back to work-related issues... I must say, I’ve had a very good streak as far as bosses go, up until my current position. This is mostly due to the fact that my co-worker and I are under “interim management,” and I think we’re both finding it difficult dealing with a lack of leadership. Now you could get into a whole tangent of leadership and what makes a good leader. Far smarter people than I have written entire books on the subject, but I’ll offer my “two cents.”

A good leader, I mean a really good leader, will inspire you. He or she may push you, but only because both of you know you can do better. A leader is not always going to be your best friend, but a good leader is a good listener. As much as they inspire you, never put them on a pedestal or be fearful of them. They’re people same as you, and as much as you may not even realize it, we’re all leaders. Whether it be work or family, or even if it’s just you. You lead yourself, right? This is assuming you’re somewhat “normal” and by that I mean you know the difference between right and wrong. You do. Unless you’re a sociopath, you do. Even criminals know the difference, if they didn’t than why do they run? Why would they try so hard no to be captured if they didn’t know right from wrong?

Again, I digress. As much as there are good leaders, there are also good followers. A good follower is NOT someone who blindly does what they’re told. That’s an idiot and believe me the world is full of them. A good follower… again a good listener, a good communicator. The simple act of keeping people “in the loop” – informed – can go a long way.

Being a good follower is often overlooked because followers and leaders alike, we all strive to be good...

The next word was going to be “leaders,” but we all strive to be good people. No matter what path or role life hands us, for the most part we all aspire to do well. We all want from time to time to have that “light” shine upon us, to not only enjoy a job well done, but to be commended for it. That’s the key. I think we all find satisfaction in knowing we did a good job or completed a task, but the proverbial pat on the back, that’s what we want. That’s what we all want, but sometimes are lacking. Sometimes we have to be satisfied with patting ourselves on the back, and many times that isn’t enough.

I won’t deny, as we all know, there are a lot of times when you have to suck it up and keep going. Pride doesn’t pay the bills. But, there are times when you can’t drop the ball. There are times when you must keep your responsibility of being a good follower, to let the leader know how you feel. A good leader will listen and try to improve the situation. If not, you have two choices – suck it up hoping the situation improves with time or leave.

This is a different world. In the past you went to work for a company and you were there until you retired with a gold Timex. Today, employees no matter how high on the food chain come and go whether they were let go or simply wanted a change. Everything seems exceedingly temporary – everything, everyone disposable.

What kind of world is this? Can we change? They say change starts at the top. That is true for the most part, unless that change began with a suggestion from a responsible employee who merely asked to be heard.

Kickin’ It Old School

Last night, Lago and I attended a St. Patrick’s Day party. We weren’t sure if we would make it or not, depended on when Lago got home from work yesterday. I had picked up some Murphy’s Irish Red earlier in the day not knowing if the party was B.Y.O.B. or not. I had one before we left, so Lago drove and she was also the designated driver for the evening since she had to work again today.

The party had kicked off around 2 p.m., so most folks were feeling that ol’ St. Paddy’s magic by the time we got there after 7 p.m. They had already tapped their 2nd Yuengling Lager keg at this point. They had a kegerator, which made for a fine pour and no keg pumping needed – sweet!

Our host Chris is a lab tech at Lago’s animal hospital.

Chris had a big fire going out back. Someone had thrown a bench on the fire shortly before we ventured out. I didn’t notice this at the time, but check out that big belly in the photo on the right. That’s a whole lotta belly!

Back inside the garage, one of Chris’ buds fell asleep at the table. As you can see from the picts, standard party policy regarding this situation was enforced. I don’t have a photo of it, but later his sleeves were stapled to the chair.

Now I don’t condone this behavior, but some taunting did occur. The grounds for this taunting remains a mystery, and whether this was NCAA-basketball related or not, is not clear. I’m merely here to report the facts, but apparently taunting was called for and taunting taken to the HNL (‘hole ‘notha level) was delivered. You be the judge.

I posted most of the Lounge videos in our Lago's Lounge channel on YouTube, watch them here... http://www.youtube.com/lagoslounge

Just when you think you’ve seen or heard of every drinking game imaginable, along comes “Hammer-Schlager.” I for one follow the tried and true motto that hand tools, especially a hammer & nails and drinking don’t mix. Apparently, the Germans don’t follow this methodology. We were told this game is actually played in German pubs under a German name, but with a much smaller hammer and a block of wood. Americanized, the game is played with a large log, a blacksmith hammer and joist hanger nails.

Nails are tapped in around the top of the log before the game begins. Each person then takes one hit per turn with the small pointed end of the hammer. The first person to get their nail flush with the log wins. Of course as all drinking games go, the losers chug their beers.

After watching the first round, Lago and I gave it a try before we left. We didn’t win and by this point chugging of the beer was optional. We didn’t stay very late since Lago had to work today, but we had a good time. So there you have it, another St. Paddy’s Day in the books.

Sunny today, but only supposed to make it to a high of 50. This may sound crazy to you folks in the northeast, but I may do some grass cutting today and spread some lawn fertilizer and seed. Enjoy your Sunday!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Top O' the Afternoon to ya! A fine St. Paddy's Day it be me laddies and lasses.

Thought I'd share an audio clip from an episode of NBC's "30 Rock" titled "The Fighting Irish."

The episode features Nathan Lane as Jack Donaghy's brother. Jack Donaghy is played by Alec Baldwin. The audio clip showcases the best names for ye Irish fists.

Watch the entire episode at NBC.com

This morning I obtained the first concert tickets of the upcoming summer concert season when I picked up a couple tix for the John Mayer show here in August.

The Dave Matthews Band is starting their summer tour late this year, also in August, most likely due to Dave and his wife expecting a child in June/July. Announcement of the tour dates are coming soon.

Raise a pint o' green ale...

"May your home be filled with laughter,
May your pockets be filled with gold,
And may you have all the happiness,
Your Irish heart can hold."

OR...

"As ye slide down the banisters of life,
may the splinters never point the wrong way."

One more...

"Aye, To those that love us, love us,
To those that hate us, may God turn their hearts,
if He can't turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles,
So we may know them by their limp."

On Tap at The Lounge - 3/16/2007

Aye me lads, how are ye on this fine St. Patty's Day Eve? What's going down at your lounge, grotto, pub or bungalow?

The Monkey has gone with an excellent and rather appropriate Harp Lager...

... ol' Lazy Acres is enjoying a "St. Patty" and a Fat Tire brew (nice choice) & listening to DMB's "Tripping Billies"...

... while I'm enjoying a glass of Dynamite Vineyards Cabernet.

In other news, our annual Dave Matthews Band Warehouse package arrived today. The CD collection looks pretty cool with a variety of older and newer tacks. I haven't listened to it yet, but I think I may go ahead and add it to The Lounge jukebox. BTW, for you Warehouse newbies, we get an extra 3 tracks on our CD because we've been members since 2002! :~)

Speaking of tunage, last five tracks on the jukebox...

O.A.R. & Robert Randolph's cover of "Fool in the Rain," a live version of John Mayer's "Biggger Than My Body," The Rolling Stones "Honky Tonk Women," Van "The Man" Morrison with his classic "Domino," and The Isley Brothers "It's Your Thing."

It is yo thang - go on wit yo bad self!

The Big 40 Video

"I want to bowl and get a tattoo."
- The Monkey, from The Big 40 Video

Now that the DVDs have been shipped, thought I'd share The Big 40 video online with all y'all. Even compressed, it's a pretty large Windows Media Video file, 103 MB. This version is also slightly edited, not for content, but for time and file size.

Be sure to check out two photo montages set to music, one near the beginning and one at the end of the video. If you want to see the video in its entirety, please contact your nearest Big 40 attendee.

For best results, download the file first then play it from your computer. To do this, right click on the video link below and select "Save Target As..." then select a directory to save the file, preferably somewhere you'll remember so you can go back to it such as "My Documents" or the Desktop.

On Tap at The Lounge

It started as funny emails with the Monkey and I sharing picts of our beverage of choice for a weekend evening. I thought it might be even funnier to share these picts here in the recurring feature I started a couple weeks ago dubbed "On Tap at The Lounge."

Just so you know, it's not all fun and games here at The Lounge. It was sunny and in the 60s today so I did some work in the backyard. It definitely feels like Spring has sprung early here. After the yard work and some clean up, Lago and I ventured over to the Total Wine to restock The Lounge.

Beer:
Carlsberg - Copenhagen, Denmark
Anchor Steam - San Francisco, Calif.

Wine:
King Estate Pinot Gris 2004 - Eugene, Oregon
Martin Ray Pinot Noir 2005 - Santa Rosa, Calif.
Clos Du Val Chardonnay 2004 - Napa, Cailf.

As you can see from the picts we have some Casillero del Diablo Chardonnay left from last evening. Believe it or not, I've never had a Carlsberg. They're good, I think they taste like Becks, another fav. The Martin Ray is a new one for us. They had some open for a free tasting at the store. Lago tried it and liked it.

Speaking of what's On Tap, the Lounge jukebox just went from Eric Clapton's "Sweet Home Chicago" to The Violent Femmes "Add It Up." Has anyone seen this, a new Wendy's commercial features a Femmes tune - I feel truly old.

Of course the jukebox just now slid into DMB's "Grey Street" - Salut!

The Joshua Tree Turns 20

U2's "The Joshua Tree" album was released 20 years ago today. I have much more to write on this subject, but not the time. Please check back soon for more.

For now, I leave you with this... where were you when "The Joshua Tree" came out? As for me, I was on my first sojourn to sunny Southern California.

Morning Fright

Saturday morning, good to sleep in after a nice evening at home. We finally got around to watching “The Departed” last night, will definitely add that one to the library. Although it was Lago’s birthday yesterday, she was scheduled to work this weekend. She left early this morning and as usual reset the house alarm when she left. Unbeknownst to me, she selected the wrong setting. Once I finally got up and started to the kitchen to make some coffee, I was blasted by the alarm siren. I can tell you, if I wasn’t awake yet, I certainly was now. My initial thought was that if the alarm was going off someone broke in, sounds logical enough. So I yell “Hey…,” which may or may not have been followed by expletives. Because, surely the shrieking alarm is not enough to deter anyone, it must be accompanied by me to reach full determent capacity, right? No. Then I realize the dog is looking at me wondering what’s with the shouting. I go to the alarm keypad and see that Lago had mistakenly set the alarm to “away” instead of “stay.” I turned off the alarm and a moment later the security company called. At least I have the satisfaction of knowing it works. All was fine, except I think it took awhile for the critters and me to settle down after this little scare. Oh well, such is life at The Lounge.

In case you're wondering, I got Lago a stone mortar & pestle she had wanted to grind seasonings for cooking. We also have tickets to see Mr. Harry Connick Jr. this weekend - a favorite on The Lounge jukebox.
